Joust Meaning in Volleyball

A joust in volleyball occurs when both teams contact the ball above the net. Players push against each other simultaneously. Strength and timing decide the outcome.

Jousts happen unexpectedly. Players react instinctively. Therefore, quick hands matter. The ball often drops straight down. For example, a tight set floats above the net. A blocker and a hitter meet it together. Both push hard. The ball rolls toward one side. One team wins the point through the joust.
