Kagi Zuki is a short-range karate punch, also known as the hook punch or the right-angle strike. The practitioner swings the fist across the front of the body with the elbow bent at ninety degrees. This punch is designed to hit targets on the side of the opponent, like the ribs or jaw.
It is a very compact movement that stays close to the center of the practitioner for safety. The power for this strike comes from a sharp and sudden rotation of the hips and torso. An athlete lands a hook punch to the side of a heavy bag during a speed drill.
Keeping the forearm parallel to the ground ensures that the force of the strike is delivered correctly. This punch is a great choice when the opponent has a tight and narrow defensive guard.
