Kata-Juji-Jime is a half cross strangle performed with the uniform lapels. The attacker crosses the arms to grab both sides of the collar. One hand faces up while the other hand faces down on the fabric. This grip allows the player to pull the lapels across the throat. The attacker uses the wrists to apply pressure to the neck sides. A player often uses this while sitting between the legs of the defender. This technique relies on the strength of the forearms and the grip. One example happens when the attacker pulls the opponent close to finish. Tightening the space between the elbows increases the effectiveness of the choke. The player must maintain a stable base to prevent being rolled over. This strangle is a fundamental skill for all new judo students.
