Kneebar Meaning in Mixed Martial Arts

A kneebar is a grappling submission that targets the knee joint of an opponent. The attacker isolates the leg and straightens it between their own thighs. This position allows the fighter to arch their hips against the back of the knee. This pressure forces the joint to extend beyond its natural range of motion. The resulting force causes intense pain and can tear ligaments or tendons quickly. Defensive fighters must tap out immediately to prevent a serious long-term leg injury. Successful execution requires controlling the hip of the opponent to prevent them from spinning. It is a powerful leg lock that can end a fight from many positions. Skilled practitioners often set this up from the bottom guard or during a scramble. A grappler secures a kneebar after transitioning from a failed single leg takedown attempt. Squeezing the knees together tightly ensures the opponent cannot retract their trapped limb easily. Keeping the opponent’s heel tucked into the armpit provides the leverage needed to finish. This technique demonstrates how mechanical advantage can overcome the strength of a large muscle group.
