Definition: A knuckleball is a slow, unpredictable pitch thrown with the knuckles or fingertips to prevent the ball from spinning in the air. Without spin, the ball “flutters” and changes direction randomly, making it extremely difficult for batters to hit and catchers to catch.
Because the path of a knuckleball depends on the wind and tiny air currents, even the pitcher doesn’t know exactly where it will go. While it is much slower than a standard fastball, its erratic movement keeps hitters off balance. Pitchers who master this rare throw can often play much longer in their careers because it puts very little strain on the arm.
Example: The batter swung and missed by a foot because the knuckleball danced left and then right just as it reached the plate.
