Kokutsu Dachi means the back-leaning stance where the majority of body weight rests behind. A student places seventy percent of the total weight on the bent back leg. A karate practitioner uses this stance to block a punch while stepping backward. Keeping the heels aligned helps maintain the necessary balance during high-speed transitions. A student must keep the torso upright to see all incoming movements clearly. This position allows for a fast shift into an offensive strike or kick.
