Kosa Dachi is a specialized karate position known as the cross legged stance used for sudden movements. One leg crosses behind the other so that the back knee sits near the calf of the front leg. Only the ball of the back foot touches the ground while the front foot stays flat for support. This stance often appears after a jump or a quick turn to help the practitioner maintain their balance. It allows the body to stay compact while preparing to spring into a new direction or strike. A student lands in a cross stance after performing a flying side kick during a formal demonstration. Strong ankles are necessary to support the weight of the body in this relatively narrow and unstable position. Lowering the hips helps the martial artist remain steady when transitioning out of this specific foot placement.
