Kyu is the rank system for students below the black belt level. These levels use colored belts to show the progress of a beginner. The numbers count downward as the student gets closer to the goal. A student moves from a tenth rank up to a first rank. A beginner starts at the highest number and works toward the lowest. Each step requires a formal test of the basic skills and forms. This system provides clear goals for the students to achieve during training. Earning a new color builds confidence and encourages the student to continue. The requirements for each level become more difficult as the number decreases. Most schools use white, yellow, green, and brown belts for these ranks. This structure helps the instructor organize the curriculum for the various classes.
