The lag is the traditional way to decide who starts the game. Both players hit a ball from the head rail simultaneously. The balls must travel to the far end and return toward them. The goal is to stop your ball as close as possible to the starting rail. Whoever gets their ball closer wins the right to break first. This replaces a simple coin toss with a test of speed control. It is a show of skill before the actual match even begins. You must judge the speed of the cloth and the table rails. For example, a player hits their ball too hard and it bounces back far. The opponent wins the lag because their ball stopped one inch from the rail. Mastering the lag gives you a psychological edge early in the match. It is a classic ritual in competitive pool and billiards.
