A lap counter is a person or device used to track the number of laps. In long-distance races, volunteers stand at the end of the pool to show numbered plastic boards. The swimmer sees the remaining distance every time they turn at that specific end of the pool. This helps the athlete manage their pacing and know when to start their final sprint. A teammate dips a large orange board into the water to show the number eleven. For very long events, these counters are essential for keeping the athlete focused and on track. Most competitions provide these boards for races longer than five hundred yards or meters in length. Using a lap counter prevents the swimmer from losing their place during an exhausting endurance race.
