Latitude Meaning in Sailing

Latitude represents the geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth’s surface. It is measured in degrees, from 0° at the equator to 90° at the North and South Poles. For a navigator, latitude is traditionally determined by measuring the angle of the sun at noon or the height of the North Star (Polaris) above the horizon. One clear example involves a sailor checking their GPS and seeing they are at 34 degrees North latitude. Combined with ‘longitude,’ latitude allows a sailor to pinpoint their exact location on a nautical chart. Historically, latitude was much easier to calculate than longitude, making it the primary reference for ancient explorers.
