A lead-off is the action of a runner moving away from a base. In softball, runners cannot leave the bag until the pitcher actually releases the ball. This move helps the runner get a head start toward the next base during play. If a player leaves the base too early, the umpire will call them out. A runner on first base sprints forward the moment the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. This small distance can be the difference between being safe and being out at second. Players must time their departure perfectly with the motion of the pitching arm of the opponent. This technique is a fundamental part of aggressive base running in every competitive game. Consistent lead-offs put pressure on the defense to make fast and accurate throws.
