A leg triangle is a grappling submission that uses the legs to choke. The attacker wraps their legs around the neck and one arm of the opponent. By crossing the ankles, the fighter creates a tight triangular shape with their limbs. This position squeezes the carotid arteries on both sides of the opponent’s neck. The pressure forces the defensive fighter to tap out to avoid losing consciousness. This move is most common when a fighter is on their back in guard. It provides a powerful defensive tool against opponents who try to land ground strikes. Proper execution requires the attacker to pull their own shin to tighten the hold. Most experts consider this one of the most effective submissions in mixed martial arts. A grappler finishes a leg triangle after trapping the opponent’s right arm inside. Angling the body to the side increases the choking pressure on the trapped neck. Pulling down on the opponent’s head prevents them from standing up to escape. This technique uses the strongest muscles of the body to overcome the upper body.
