A lift generally refers to any time a player helps a teammate gain height. While most common in lineouts, it can also happen during kick restarts. One player supports the other’s waist or legs to help them catch high balls. This technique ensures the team wins possession under heavy aerial pressure. It requires significant leg strength and balance from the supporting players. The person being lifted must remain stiff to stay balanced in the air. Safety rules prevent lifting players before the ball is actually kicked or thrown. For example, during a kickoff, a forward might lift a teammate to catch the ball. This prevents the opposing team from getting an easy start to their attack. If a lifter drops their teammate, the referee will penalize them heavily. Proper lifting technique is a fundamental skill taught at every professional club. It turns a chaotic jump into a controlled and strategic winning play. Mastery of the lift provides a team with consistent ball security.
