A lifting belt is a thick strap of leather or nylon worn around the waist. This equipment provides a surface for the abdominal muscles to push against during a heavy lift. Increasing internal pressure helps stabilize the spine and protects the lower back from excessive physical stress. The athlete tightened the buckle before stepping onto the platform for a heavy clean and jerk. Wearing this support allows a lifter to move more weight with a higher degree of safety. Most professionals use these belts only during their heaviest sets to maintain core muscle strength.
