The line of scrimmage in American football is the imaginary line where each play begins. This line matters because it defines legal movement. Offenses must stay behind it before the snap. Quarterbacks must throw from behind it.
Defenses line up based on this marker. Officials watch it closely. For example, a forward pass becomes illegal if thrown beyond the line of scrimmage.
