Look-Back Rule Meaning in Softball

The look back rule forces a runner to decide their next move quickly after play. This rule activates when the pitcher has the ball inside the eight foot pitching circle. Once the pitcher is ready the runner must immediately return to base or advance. The runner cannot stop or dance between the bases to trick the defensive team members. A runner rounds first base after a walk while the pitcher stands in the circle. The runner must then commit to second base or return to first base without hesitation. If the runner stops moving for too long the umpire will call them out instantly. This rule prevents the offense from wasting time and keeps the pace of the game moving. It places a significant mental burden on the baserunner to make a fast and final choice.
