Luffing Match Meaning in Sailing

A luffing match is a tactical maneuver in sailboat racing where one boat tries to prevent another from passing by turning up into the wind (luffing). This forces the overtaking boat to either turn with them or lose speed as their sails begin to flap. One clear example involves two sailors in a match race zigzagging toward the wind as the leading boat ‘defends’ its position.
