Mae Keage is a karate technique known as the front rising kick used for stretching and blocking. The practitioner swings the leg straight up toward the ceiling without bending the knee at the joint. This motion develops flexibility in the hamstrings and improves the range of motion for other high kicks. It can also serve as a defensive move to knock an opponent’s arm away from the face. The foot should stay flexed so the toes do not point toward the target during the swing. A student performs a series of high straight leg swings during a warm up session. Keeping the standing leg firmly rooted to the mat ensures the body remains balanced and stable. Proper posture prevents the back from rounding as the leg reaches its highest point of travel.
