The main set represents the core portion of a swimming practice session where the highest intensity occurs. This segment follows the warm-up and focus specifically on the primary goal of the day’s training. Coaches design these sets to improve speed, endurance, or specific stroke techniques through repetitive swimming intervals. This part of the workout usually requires the most physical effort and mental concentration from the athletes. A swimmer completes a main set consisting of ten fast hundred-meter repetitions on a tight interval. Everything before this set prepares the body, and everything after focuses on recovery and cooling down. The difficulty of the main set increases as the season progresses to build peak competitive fitness. Consistent performance during these sets directly correlates to faster race times during the competitive swim season.
