Mat Return Meaning in Wrestling

A mat return brings your opponent back to the mat. It happens after they stand up from bottom position. You keep control while lifting or guiding them down. The goal is to stay on top. You must return them safely and legally. Slamming is not allowed in most levels. Balance and body control matter here. You stay tight around their waist or hips. For example, a wrestler stands up to escape. The top wrestler lifts and returns him to the mat. Control continues without giving up points. Mat returns stop escape attempts. Strong positioning makes them effective.
