Mawashi Empi Uchi is a powerful karate technique known as the circular or roundhouse elbow strike. The practitioner swings the elbow in a horizontal arc to hit the side of the head or torso. This strike is intended for very close range combat where a full arm punch would be ineffective. It relies heavily on the rotation of the hips and the core muscles to create a stinging impact. The striking arm stays bent at an acute angle to keep the elbow pointed toward the intended target. A student delivers a circular elbow strike to a heavy bag during a close range fighting simulation. Pivoting on the ball of the foot allows the body to rotate fully and deliver more energy. This technique is often used as a finishing move after a defender successfully blocks a straight punch.
