A mixed grip involves holding the barbell with one palm facing forward and one facing backward. This hand position prevents the round bar from rolling out of the fingers during heavy lifts. Weightlifters often use this technique when their hands become tired during a long training session. The lifter gripped the heavy bar with this uneven hold to finish the final set. Using this grip increases the total amount of weight a person can hold without slipping. Most athletes switch which hand faces forward to maintain equal muscle balance on both sides.
