O-Goshi Meaning in Judo

O-Goshi is a major hip throw that involves lifting the opponent. The attacker places one arm around the waist of the defender firmly. The hips slide across to act as a pivot for the lift. A strong rotation of the body tosses the opponent over the hip. One game example involves a player throwing the defender for an ippon. This move requires the attacker to get the hips below the center. Proper execution involves a powerful pull with the hand holding the sleeve. This throw is one of the first techniques taught to new students. Strategy involves stepping deep to ensure the hip makes full body contact. It demonstrates the basic principle of using the waist for leverage.
