Offense refers to the team that is currently batting and attempting to score runs. The offensive goal is to hit the ball and advance around the four bases. Players use bats, helmets, and batting gloves to perform their specific roles in the lineup. Scoring happens when an offensive player touches home plate after a legal circuit of play. A batter drives a ball into the gap to start an offensive scoring rally. The offense continues to bat until the defensive team records three outs in the inning. Strategic hitting and aggressive base running are the primary tools used by the offensive side. Teams focus on high contact rates and speed to pressure the opposing defensive unit. Success for the offense is measured by the total number of runs on the board.
