Offspeed Meaning in Softball

Offspeed describes a pitch thrown at a slower velocity than a standard fast pitch. The pitcher uses the same arm motion but a different grip to deceive the batter. This change in speed causes the hitter to swing too early at the ball. Common offspeed pitches include changeups and certain types of breaking balls in the dirt. A pitcher throws a heavy fast ball followed by a much slower offspeed delivery. The batter swings before the ball reaches the plate because the timing was different. Mastering this change of pace is essential for keeping hitters off balance during the game. It makes a fast pitch seem even faster by comparison to the slower ball. Coaches teach offspeed grips to help pitchers succeed against very powerful and fast hitters.
