On the up refers to hitting the ball just after it has bounced off the pitch. The batter strikes the ball while it is still rising toward its maximum height from the ground. This shot requires excellent timing and very fast hands to execute safely and with power. It is an aggressive way to play against bowlers who are delivering a good length. A batter stepped forward and hit the rising ball through the covers for four runs. This technique allows the player to use the natural momentum of the ball to gain speed. It carries a higher risk because the ball is not yet at its most stable point. Players with great hand eye coordination often prefer this style of play to score quickly. Mastering this shot allows a batter to dominate even the best fast bowling attacks.
