A one-hand touch describes a legal finish or turn in freestyle and backstroke events. Unlike other strokes, these styles do not require both hands to hit the wall simultaneously. Swimmers typically reach out with a single arm to touch the touchpad as quickly as possible. This allows the athlete to maintain a more streamlined and narrow body position during the finish. A swimmer touches the wall with their right hand to win the fifty-meter sprint. Proper timing ensures the hand reaches full extension just as the body nears the pool end. Coaches emphasize a firm and fast touch to stop the electronic clock at the exact moment. Using only one hand provides a slight speed advantage over strokes requiring a more complex touch.
