One-on-one defense is a style where a defender guards a specific offensive player. The defender stays close to their opponent to prevent them from catching passes. This technique focuses on individual skill and physical presence to stop a drive. A player must maintain a low stance to react to sudden body feints. Winning the individual battle is the main goal of this defensive positioning style. A defender blocks a playmaker’s path through the middle of the handball court. This direct pressure forces the attacker to pass the ball away from goal. Coaches use this to shut down the most talented scorer on the other. It requires high speed and the ability to move laterally across the floor. This defense is very effective for disrupting the flow of a team’s offense.
