Optional Dive Meaning in Diving

An optional dive is a maneuver chosen by the athlete from the official list. Unlike compulsory dives, these have no limit on the degree of difficulty. Divers select their most challenging moves to maximize their potential total point score. This part of the competition allows the athlete to showcase their unique skills. The difficulty multiplier for these dives is often much higher than standard moves. One example of an optional dive is a forward four and a half tuck. Most competitions feature a set number of these dives in the final round. Strategy plays a large role in selecting which optional dives to include. A diver must balance high risk with their ability to execute perfectly. These dives often determine the final rankings in elite international diving contests.
