The outside shoulder is the side of the body furthest away from the goal post. Positioning toward this shoulder helps a defender stay between the attacker and the scoring area. This technique allows the defender to see both the player they are marking and the ball. It is a vital part of defensive footwork and body placement in the goal circle. A goal keeper guards the outside shoulder to push a shooter away from the best angle. By forcing the attacker toward the sideline, the defender reduces the chances of an easy shot. Maintaining this position requires constant small adjustments as the offensive player moves around the court. One real-world example features a defender blocking a pass by standing on the outside shoulder of a shooter.
