Over the Top Meaning in Cricket

Over the top refers to a batting shot where the ball is hit high into the air. The batter aims to clear the fielders standing in the inner ring to find the boundary. This aggressive move carries a high risk of being caught if the ball lacks enough power. It is a common strategy used during the final overs of a fast paced match. A batter hit the ball over the top of the mid off fielder for a six. This tactic forces the captain to move fielders further away from the central pitch area. Using this shot requires great confidence and a very clean swing of the wooden bat. Players must judge the length of the ball perfectly to ensure they make solid contact. Mastering this lofted stroke allows a team to score many runs in a very short time.
