Over the top is a penalty called when a player enters a ruck from a dangerous or illegal position. Players must enter a contest for the ball through the back of the ruck, often called the gate. Diving over the pile of bodies from the side or the opponent’s side is strictly forbidden.
This action is dangerous because it can lead to head injuries or collapsed limbs. It also prevents the team in possession from being able to play the ball fairly. Referees are very strict about this to maintain player safety and game speed. For example, a defender might jump over the top of a ruck to grab the ball before it comes out.
The official will immediately blow the whistle and award a penalty to the attacking team. Players must stay on their feet and drive forward from a legal starting point. This rule ensures that the ruck remains a contest of strength and technique rather than a chaotic pile-up. It keeps the breakdown clean and allows the match to progress safely.
