An overhead smash is a powerful shot hit above the head. It usually happens when the opponent hits a lob. The player raises the racket and strikes downward. This motion looks similar to a serve. The goal is to finish the point with force. Good footwork helps position under the ball. For example, a player tracks a high lob near the net. They jump slightly and smash the ball into open court. The opponent cannot return it. The overhead smash punishes weak defensive lobs.
