An overhead squat involves squatting down while holding a barbell with straight arms above the head. This exercise requires a high level of balance and flexibility in the shoulders and the hips. The athlete must keep the bar perfectly still while moving their body toward the floor. A weightlifter performed this movement to improve their stability for the catch phase of the snatch. Keeping the chest upright prevents the heavy weight from falling forward during the deep squat. This drill builds the core strength needed to support heavy loads in the highest position.
