Overtaking Meaning in Sailing

Overtaking describes a boat that is coming up from behind and passing another vessel. In maritime rules, the boat doing the passing must stay clear of the boat being passed. This rule applies even if the faster boat normally has the right-of-way over the slower one. A skipper steers wide to the side to give the lead boat plenty of room to move. The overtaking vessel remains responsible for avoiding a collision until the maneuver is finished. This requires constant observation of the speed and the direction of the boat in front. In racing, overtaking is a primary goal that requires finding clear air and better wind. Proper technique ensures that the pass happens safely without interfering with the other vessel’s path.
