Overthrow Meaning in Softball

An overthrow is a thrown ball that misses the target and travels into the distant field. This usually happens when a fielder rushes a throw to beat a fast moving runner. An overthrow allows runners to advance to the next base because the ball remains live. The defense must scramble to recover the ball while the offense gains a free advantage. A third baseman throws the ball high over the head of the first base fielder. The ball rolls into the grass and the batter moves safely to the second base. Accuracy in throwing is just as important as speed for every defensive player on field. Teams practice relay drills to minimize the distance and risk of these costly throwing mistakes. Preventing overthrows keeps the opposition from scoring unearned runs during a close and competitive game.
