A passing lane is the open space on either side of a net player that you can hit the ball through. When an opponent moves to the net, they try to ‘close the lanes’ by standing in the middle. Your goal is to find the gap to the left or right where they cannot reach the ball.
For example, a player sees their opponent rush the net and quickly drives a forehand into the open passing lane for a winner. This forces the net player to guess which side you will target. It is a key concept for winning points against aggressive attackers.
Finding these lanes requires good vision and calm nerves under pressure. You can hit a passing shot down the line or crosscourt to find these openings. It turns the opponent’s aggressive position into a defensive scramble.
