Penalty Throw Meaning in Handball

A penalty throw is a direct shot at goal from seven meters. The referee awards this for a foul that destroys a clear scoring chance. The shooter stands behind the seven meter line with one foot firmly planted. The goalkeeper can move forward up to the four meter line to block. All other players must stay outside the nine meter free throw line area. An attacker takes a penalty throw after being pushed from behind during a jump. This shot provides a very high probability of scoring a goal for teams. The shooter often uses a fake move to make the goalkeeper move first. If the ball hits the post and returns, the shooter can play it. Mastering the penalty throw is vital for a team’s primary offensive scoring leader.
