Pick-off Meaning in Dodgeball

A pick-off is a strategic throw aimed at an opponent who is currently distracted. This usually happens when the target is looking at a different ball or player. A thrower hits a defender who is busy trying to retrieve a ball nearby. This opportunistic play relies on timing and awareness of the entire field of action. The goal is to catch the opponent off guard so they cannot dodge effectively. Quick and silent throws are the best way to execute a successful pick-off in play. Teams often coordinate to create a distraction that sets up these easy and fast eliminations. Staying alert is the only way for a player to avoid being picked off.
