Pinch Hitter Meaning in Baseball

Definition: A pinch hitter is a substitute player sent into the game to bat in place of the teammate whose turn it is in the lineup. Once a pinch hitter is used, the original player is removed from the game and cannot return.

Managers usually use a pinch hitter for strategic reasons, such as putting in a stronger batter when the game is close or choosing a player who matches up better against the current pitcher. It is a high-pressure role because the pinch hitter often comes off the bench cold and is expected to deliver a hit immediately.
