The pit is the recessed area at the very end of the lane located behind the pin deck. Its job is to catch the bowling ball and the fallen pins after a throw has been completed. From the pit a conveyor system separates the ball from the pins and sends them to their proper places. Therefore the pit acts as the collection point for everything that leaves the playing surface during a game.
