Pivot Area Meaning in Handball

The pivot area is the zone along the six meter goal line. This is the primary territory where the line player operates during an attack. The pivot moves laterally along this line to find gaps in the defense. This area is usually crowded with both offensive and defensive handball court players. Success in this zone requires great physical strength and very quick reactions. A pivot catches a ball in the pivot area and scores a goal. This space is the most dangerous part of the court for any defense. Defenders focus their energy on preventing passes from reaching the pivot area easily. Players must be careful not to step inside the goal area while moving. Controlling the pivot area allows an offense to dominate the game from inside.
