Point construction is the strategic process of hitting specific shots to gradually move an opponent out of position before going for a winner. Instead of trying to end the point on the first ball, a player uses a series of shots to build an advantage. This often involves hitting deep, high, or wide balls to create an open space in the court. Good point construction shows that a player is thinking ahead and using logic rather than just raw power. For example, a player might hit two deep crosscourt shots to pull their opponent wide and then hit a short angle to finish the point. This ‘chess-on-court’ approach is the sign of a high-level and experienced tactical player. It ensures that when you finally go for a winning shot, the risk is much lower because the court is wide open.
