A pop pass is a very short and soft throw made to a teammate who is running close by. The passer literally pops the ball up into the air for the receiver to run onto at full speed. This move usually happens during a tackle or as a quick link between two players in a tight space. It does not require a long wind-up or a spinning motion with the hands. The goal is to keep the ball moving so quickly that the defense cannot react in time. For example, a tackled player might pop the ball up just inches from the ground to a trailing teammate. This keeps the attack alive and often catches the defenders out of their organized positions. It is a vital skill for maintaining momentum when the game becomes congested and physical. Beginners will see this most often near the ruck where space is very limited. A perfectly timed pop pass can turn a stagnant play into a sudden and exciting break. It requires soft hands and great spatial awareness from both players involved.
