Positive check-in is the process of confirming a swimmer will compete in their event. This happens at the beginning of a meet or before a specific session starts. Athletes must sign a sheet or notify an official to remain on the heat sheet. Failing to check in results in the swimmer being removed from that specific race. A swimmer signs the check-in list at the front desk before the morning warm-up. This system helps meet directors organize the lanes and remove empty spots for better flow. Coaches remind their athletes to check in early to avoid any stressful last-minute issues. Positive check-in is most common for long-distance events with a limited number of lanes.
