Poursuivant Meaning in Cycling

Poursuivant is a French term used to describe a rider or group chasing the leaders. In a race, a small group of cyclists often breaks away from the main pack to try and win. The followers who leave the pack to catch those leaders are the poursuiants. They sit in a difficult middle ground between the front of the race and the main crowd. These riders must work extremely hard to close the gap before the finish line. If they succeed, they join the leaders and have a chance to win the stage. If they fail, the main pack might swallow them up before the end. For example, a lone rider might act as a poursuivant to bridge the gap to a teammate further ahead. It is a high-risk move that requires perfectly timed effort and great physical strength. Their progress is often tracked by time gaps.
