Pre-start Meaning in Sailing

Pre-start refers to the critical period of time (usually 5 to 10 minutes) before a race officially begins. During this time, boats maneuver in a limited area behind the starting line, trying to find the best position and timing to cross the line exactly as the starting horn sounds. One clear example involves a fleet of boats ‘circling’ and ‘jockeying’ for position while a series of flags and horns count down the minutes. The pre-start is often the most intense and tactical part of a race, as boats try to ‘block’ or ‘luff’ their competitors to gain an advantage. A mistake here, such as crossing the line early (OCS), can result in a penalty that ruins the entire race. Mastering the pre-start requires nerves of steel and perfect boat-handling skills.
