Preload is a setting used to adjust the initial tension on a bicycle’s suspension fork or shock. It determines how much force is needed to start the suspension moving. By turning a dial, you can compress the internal spring to match your body weight. Proper preload ensures the bike sits at the right height when you climb on.
If the preload is too low, the bike will feel soft and dive under braking. If it is too high, the ride will feel harsh and bumpy on small rocks. Setting this correctly is the first step to a smooth mountain bike ride.
For example, a heavier rider will increase the preload to prevent the suspension from bottoming out on jumps. It allows one bike to perform well for many different people. This simple adjustment makes your off-road experience much more controlled and comfortable.
