A press to handstand is a strength-based movement used to start platform diving maneuvers. The athlete begins by standing on their hands at the edge of the tower. They slowly lift their legs and torso into a vertical and inverted position. This move requires exceptional core strength and shoulder stability to perform with total control. The diver must hold this stationary pose for at least two seconds before jumping. One example of this is the start of an armstand double back somersault. Judges award points for the smoothness and the stillness of the initial balance hold. Any wobbling or shaking during the lift results in a deduction of execution points. This technique demonstrates the high physical fitness levels required for elite platform diving events. It is a signature move for the most skilled and powerful platform divers.
